Michael Gamble's Rhythm Serenaders
The Rhythm Serenaders is classic small-group swing at its finest. The six piece combo is a hard-swinging dedication to the style and arrangements of the 1930′s and 40′s, paying homage to the small groups of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Lionel Hampton, Roy Eldridge, Illinois Jacquet, and other artists that mastered the small group sound from the dawn of the Swing Era ’til it’s sunset. Add to it, two lead singers: Laura Windley and Russ Wilson and you have an amazing night of swing music.
Craig Gildner's Big Band
Washington D.C.’s foremost swing bandleader brings his book of classic big band arrangements to ALX this November to lead an all star version of The Craig Gildner Big Band. Having grown up on swing music recorded by Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington and Harry James, Craig fulfills his dream of playing with excellent musicians who understand the style. Songs like "Down South Camp Meeting", "Tickle Toe", "Big John’s Special", "At Sundown", "Stompin’ at The Savoy" and "For Dancers Only" are performed with an authentic feel.
In addition to stocking the band with well known musicians on the swing scene like Michael Gamble on bass, Dan Levinson on clarinet/sax, Russ Wilson on drums, and Laura Windley on vocals, Craig will have his right hand man and chief arranger Scott Silbert on lead alto/clarinet. He’s also working with ALX staff to fine tune tempos and selection of arrangements. It’s going to be a fabulous evening of music designed for dancing.
The CGBB has performed at Lindy on The Rocks 2014, DCLX, and Lindy 500 to hundreds of satisfied dancers. Get ready to cut a rug!
Swingin' Bats with Dan Levinson
Swingin' Bats is a hot jazz band assembled specifically for ALX. Featuring band leader Dan Levinson on clarinet, Hal Smith on drums, David Jellema on cornet, Dan Walton on piano, Brooks Promo on guitar and Josh Hoag on Bass.
Thrift Set Orchestra with Jonathan Doyle
Born out of a shared love of Classic Swing and Hot Jazz, the Austin, Texas band embraces playing both light and hot; at times reminiscent of a Duke Ellington small group or Django Reinhardt mingled with Milton Brown. It features four horn players (on eight horns) and guitar, banjo, upright bass, and often drum set. The ensemble writes and plays personally tailored arrangements of classic material as well as many originals. Several of the members sing; their styles unique, hinting from the sweet, melancholy of Billie Holiday to the audacity of Al Jolson to the gravel of Jelly Roll Morton’s voice.
Floyd Domino and Friends
Floyd Domino's dazzling boogie-woogie piano styling is known to audiences around the world. Floyd Domino brought home his Best Keyboards Award this April to keep company with the two Grammy Awards won for featured work with Asleep at the Wheel.
Floyd began his career with a broad grounding in jazz, boogie woogie, swing and blues piano. Floyd's sparkling keyboards and versalitlity make him the choice of swing, jazz and blues musicians well beyond his Austin, Texas home. In
addition to Asleep at the Wheel, Floyd has recorded and performed with Merle Haggard, George Strait (5 albums), The Texas Playboys, Waylon Jennings, jazz guitarist Herb Ellis, Kelly Willis, Bruce Robison, Monte Warden, Don Walser and the Crickets to name a few. Over and above his numerous awards, Austin-based Floyd Domino has played at the Kennedy Center, Inaugural events and has even been heard in outer space by way of George Strait's #1 hit, "Ace In The Hole", beamed up to the crew of the space shuttle Columbia in a wake-up call.
A rent party is a social occasion where tenants hire a musician or band to play and pass the hat to raise money to pay their rent, originating in Harlem during the 1920s. It is with this spirit of music made for fun in small spaces that we approach the music. It's swingin', hot, danceable, and most of all FUN!
Devan Jones and The Uptown Stomp
While continuing to evolve, Devan Jones & The Uptown Stomp have settled into a sound reminiscent of the Rhythm & Blues artists of the 40's and 50's such as Roy Brown, Wynonie Harris, Guitar Slim, Ray Charles, T-Bone Walker & B.B. King while still keeping an ever expanding repertoire drawing from great American music such as vintage Jazz, Big Band Swing and Chicago Blues.
The Sahara Swingtet
Lester Young never made speeches, but he had much to tell us, more often by his example than in words. Sweetness counts. Floating is all. Sing your own song. The members of the Sahara Swingtet know these truths. Better, they embody them.
Check them out at their Facebook.
The Waller Creek Vipers
Fellow lindy hopper Victor Celania started this band to cater to the dancers locally and nationally. Having been a dancer for 13 years, he knows what you want! Hard driving, energetic dance music that'll keep you swingin' out all night long! They will be featuring some of Austin's top talent, including a lineup of reeds, cornet/clarinet, vibraphone, bass, drums, guitar and vocals by the soulful Sarah Ulloa!
Donovan Keith & The Funky Feet
The final band of the event (#10) is Donovan Keith & The Funky Feet. It's a 6 piece soul band that will churn out those Motown hits one after another. You won't stop singing or dancing the entire evening.
