Also known as “The Fed”, the Austin Swing Syndicate has held dances here every Thursday since 1999. The Fed has long been considered the home of Austin swing dancing. From complete beginners to those who have been dancing for years, people learn to swing dance here every week at lessons taught by instructors from the Austin Swing Syndicate, Four on the Floor, and Go Dance. The Fed also plays host to the main events at ALX, and in years past, has also hosted the late night dance events, with the dance moving from the Grand Ballroom to the foyer that gives us a more intimate late night setting.

This year, the Fed will host all our main events, with late night events showcasing other venues around the city, and the pro band jam being an outdoor event at the local market that regularly hosts live events.

We owe this opportunity to dance in the grand ballroom to a group of industrious ladies called The Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs. This group started in Waco, TX in 1897 as a literary club. Over time, their interests expanded to include women’s issues, education, charity, and preservation.

Henry Coke Knight, a Dallas architect, designed and built the mansion in 1931. It’s one of the best examples of Georgian Revival architecture in Texas. Duke Ellington played a concert at the Fed on April 19, 1941.
